History of the radio
The world's first commercial radio service was
in 1898. It's fledgling wireless telegraph and
signal company's customer was Lloyd's of London,
the shipping insurer. For Lloyd's a spark wireless
telegraph transmitter was installed on Rathim
Island, 7.5 miles (12. kms) off the Irish coast. and
news in bound ships was send by international
mores code to a receiver on the mainland.
Communicate proved to be unaffected by storms,
fog, or a high cliff in the transmission path.
Broadcasting in other Countries:
In most European countries radio broadcasting
was thrust into patterns of organization and
development quite different from those in the
United States. Governments were quick to
recognize the value of the new medium for
educating or in some cases for propagandizing their
people control of broadcasting soon took one of
three forms. (1) state ownereship and direct
operation as in the USSR and Eastern Europe. (2)
state organized public corporation or authority
relatively free of government influence, as in the
British Commonwealth.
